May 2024: Colin Stacey’s Gilbern GT 1800

May Members’ Gathering, 14 May 2024

Come along to our Members Gathering on Tuesday 14 May at the Strathfield Golf Club to hear from Colin Stacey, who is completing the restoration of a Gilbern GT 1800 that he plans to bring to club events.

Married with two children, Colin migrated with family to Australia 40 years ago. Colin’s interests are family, classic cars, antiques, mechanical watches, eating and drinking. Until retirement he was Export Manager for Rheem/Solahart, travelling mainly to the Gulf, China, Korea, India and ASEAN countries.

Colin has maintained his interest in classic cars throughout his life, importing two to Australia – an Alvis TD 21 and the Gilbern GT 1800, the latter of which was featured in Opposite Lock at the time.

Colin plans to bring the Gilbern GT 1800, which he shares with his son Clive, to club events, having nearly completed its restoration. The Gilbern is closely related to MG cars, equipped with an MGB engine, which is mated to a Moss gearbox. Its running gear is nearly pure MGB, save the rear suspension which is live axle, trailing arms, Panhard rod, coils and dampers.

Colin expressed his appreciation at the warm welcome to the club together with the interest shown in his nearly completed Gilbern GT 1800, and we look forward to hearing more from him on Tuesday 14th, and seeing him, Clive and the Gilbern out and about.

The presentation will begin at 7:15, but why not come along early to catch up with friends over dinner. We’re looking forward to seeing you there.

Members’ Gatherings

Monthly Gatherings are open to all members and visitors. They are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:15pm at Strathfield Golf Club in Strathfield NSW.

At these gatherings you’ll be able to catch up with the latest happenings in the Club as well as enjoy a social evening with other members – we’ll usually see upwards of 100 members at a gathering. A guest speaker is often invited to present a topic of interest.

Arrive early, enjoy a delicious meal at discounted MG Car Club Sydney rates, have a drink or a cappuccino at the bar and meet up with old (and young) mates.

We also take this opportunity to offer our quality regalia products for sale, and provide access to the Club’s library of books and videos.

The 2024 MG Car Club Sydney Concours and Display Day will be held on Sunday the 20th of October in Silverwater Park, entry via Clyde Street, Silverwater.

Judging both Concours d’Elegance and Show & Shine categories for all Models of MG’s and non-marque cars.

A judging sheet is available for download to help you prepare your car, alongside the display instructions and classes.

Entry from 6:30am for volunteers to help with set up.

7:30am for other participants’ vehicles, with all to be in position by 9:00am.

Judging commences at 9:30am sharp

Food and drinks will be available from The Abingdon Café and coffee cart. Club regalia will also be for sale on the day.

We are seeking the volunteers for the following roles:

• Friday 18th 10:00pm help set out Silverwater park. Peter Baldry has offered to organise this but needs a few helpers. Please let him know if you can help
• Saturday 19th 2:00pm to help load the truck at Kennards Storage cnr Victoria Rd and Frank St Gladesville. Opposite Bunnings
• Sunday morning from 6:30am to help unload the truck and set up. Then various roles throughout the day, followed by pack up
• Scrutineers to assist model registrars
• Sunday late afternoon help unload truck back at Gladesville

Join us on Sunday November 3 for the Southern Highlands Run to lunch at Sutton Forest Inn, hosted by the TC register.

Enjoy the great country roads via Buxton, Balmoral, Hilltop, Bowral, Moss Vale and Sutton Forest, ending with a lunch at Sutton Forest Inn. Join us and enjoy the day in which ever car you feel like taking out.

Meet by 10:00am at McDonalds Narellan, on the corner of Northern Rd. and Camden Valley Way.
